1200  - 100 BC - Ancient Egyptians used gold and platinum for their exquisite jewelry and other adornments.  The daughter to the King of Thebes was buried in a tomb adorned with platinum and platinum hieroglyphics.  She was also buried with a small platinum casket that was placed in her tomb.  Later, the ancient Incas used platinum for nose rings and other jewelry.

1590-1750  Spanish Conquistadors discovered platinum but mistakenly undervalued it calling it "platina" meaning little silver.  Then, because they were searching for gold, they threw their discovery back into the rivers of Ecuador.  On a similar greedy note in the 1700's European alchemists made platinum popular because they believed the properties in platinum could change lead into gold.

Late 1700's French King Louis XVI declares platinum the only metal fit for kings and  ordered his jeweler to craft many pieces for him. In 1795 France creates the metric system and, because of the durability and resistance to wear, platinum was used for the standard measurement.  The original kilogram cylinder is still kept at the Bureau of Weights and Measures in Paris.

1800's Platinum mines were discovered in Russia and IN 1866 diamond mines were discovered in South Africa.  Platinum was chosen as the primary metal for the setting of these diamonds.  In 1884 Faberge created his famous eggs adorned with this precious platinum.  In the late 1800's platinum becomes popular among European rulers who use platinum in and around there crowns, clothes and palaces.

Early 1900's  Cartier was the first to make jewelry out of platinum.  He used platinum to enhance the  brilliance and beauty of diamonds.  King Edward VII of  England hailed Cartier as "the jeweler of Kings, and the King of jewelers."   When the talking movies became popular in the 1930's famous actresses such as Jean Harlow and Marlene Dietrich draped themselves in platinum jewelry.  One of Jean Harlow's famous movies was "Platinum Blond."

1936  Queen Elizabeth was crowned with a platinum crown featuring the famous Koh-I-Noor diamond.  Around the same time the Duke of Whales and his bride exchange platinum wedding rings made by Cartier.  His new bride now declares platinum the one and only choice for evening wear.

1939-1945  During World War II platinum is declared a strategic metal for armaments and the making of platinum jewelry is prohibited.  After the war, platinum's popularity is rekindled and many new platinum and diamonds are popular.

1967 Elvis Presley and his bride Priscilla marry in Las Vegas and choose platinum as their wedding bands.  Over the next few decades platinum and especially bridal and wedding bands become increasingly popular.
