The diamonds in your engagement ring setting can be set
several different ways. Some popular setting styles are: pave,
channel, prong, invisible or solitaire setting. Each way secures the
diamond to the metal of engagement ring setting you choose. |
Pave Engagement Ring Setting
Engagement ring settings with pave diamonds must have tiny
holes drilled in the place where the diamonds are to be set. Then, the
metal is worked up onto the diamond in typically 2 -4 places.
Usually, in a straight channel, as the one pictured, two prongs are made
to hold each stone into the engagement ring setting. |
Channel Engagement Ring Setting
Engagement ring setting with channel set diamond have a channel
carved out of the shank to hold the diamonds. The diamond setter
then grooves a channel into the side of that channel to hold the side of
the diamond. Then, the diamond is placed into the channel and the
metal is hammered onto the sides of the diamond sandwiching it into the
engagement ring setting. |
Prong Engagement Ring Setting
Engagement ring setting with prongs is the easiest to
explain. The setting comes from the mold already with prongs to hold
the diamond. Typically, there can be anywhere from 2-6 prongs to
hold the diamond. The diamond setter grooves the tip of the prongs
to place the diamond. Then, with plyers, he tightens the prongs to
secure the diamond. |
Invisible Engagement Ring Setting
Engagement ring setting with invisible setting is a unique
way of setting princess cut diamonds only. Each small princess cut
diamond is specially recut or grooved on the side of the diamond.
These tiny grooves are what holds the diamonds in place. The diamond is
then almost channel set using these tiny grooves as the place to sandwich
the metal. May people think that these diamonds are tension set and
when one stones comes out they all come out. This is untrue. Each
diamond is tighened individually. However, lost or loose diamonds
are a sign of possible problems for all the stones. |
Solitaire Engagement Ring Setting
The solitaire engagement ring setting is the name given to
a ring that has only one center diamond. Solitaires come in a
plethora of styles. (click here for a selection of solitaire
engagement ring styles) The prong for the diamond is chosen to
fit the stone. For example a princess cut must have 4 prongs.
An emerald cut also must be rectangular with 4 prongs. Other shape
diamonds have either 4, 5 or 6 depending on the shape. |
